His professional career was connected with the Faculty of Transport, CTU, where he was appointed associate professor in 2002 and then professor in 2008. From 2010 to 2018 he held the position of Dean. He also teaches applied computer science at Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, was a visiting professor at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in the USA for 5 years, is also an honorary professor at the Universidad Autonoma de Bucaramanga in Colombia, a member of several Scientific Councils at CTU, Tomas Bata University in Zlín, Czech Institute of Informatics, Robotics and Cybernetics and Faculty of Transportation CTU. His applied research focuses on the design and implementation of complex systems such as "Intelligent Transport Systems", "Smart Cities" or "Smart Regions" using artificial intelligence (AI) tools. He has been involved in leading many national and international science and research projects. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 scientific publications and twenty monographs. In 2008, he received the gold Felber Medal for the development of CTU, and in 2010 the silver medal of Matej Bel University for building the field of Informatics. In 2015 he became the first ever president of the Czech Smart City Cluster. In 2019, he was awarded the Minister of Regional Development's Smart City Personality Award. On the occasion of the celebration of 20 years of the Faculty of Transport, CTU, he recorded a solo album Acordeón Encantador. As part of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Faculty of Transport, he founded Duo Professores together with Prof. Ondrej Pribyl (cello), which recorded compositions by the Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla.
